Full Album Description

After a 20-year absence from the world jazz scene, Tobey makes his comeback debut with an elegant solo piano album entitled “Paul Tobey, It’s Time.”

His remarkable comeback comes as no surprise to the YouTube jazz community, however. In just two short years, Tobey has attracted over 14,000 jazz subscribers to his YouTube channel called JazzMentl. Thousands of “JazzMentlists” from around the world watch his weekly tutorials, as well as settle in on Saturday mornings for Tobey’s “Live Masterclasses” and performances.

His YouTube and Facebook jazz communities played a significant role in carefully selecting songs for the album “It’s Time.” Paul Desmond’s “Take Five” topped the list when it reached 6,000 views, along with hundreds of comments and shares, in just a few days on the Facebook Jazz Pianists Group.

As a fan of Dave Brubeck, Tobey seizes the opportunity to offer a unique interpretation of the song. He takes a solo on the entire form including the bridge. Tobey also explores romantic melodies like “Over the Rainbow” and “A Dream is What Your Heart Makes,” and pays homage to Sinatra with “Nancy With the Laughing Face.” There’s even a taste of his own composition style with an original piece called “Caminar,” a song he composed while on a pilgrimage in Spain.

All of these recordings and tutorials were captured live from his home studio, in Niagara-on-the-Lake, in the heart of Canada’s wine country. Tobey records on a 7-foot Ibach with ivory keys, a rare German piano. It’s undeniably a love affair between him and his instrument. While many piano albums are recorded in a concert hall or a jazz club setting, Paul prefers to deliver a “one-on-one” sound, as if he’s playing his IBACH “just for you” right there in your own living room. The album is engineered, mixed, and mastered to offer a truly intimate sound experience.
