Introduction

Welcome to Jazz Piano Mastery, a unique journey into the heart of jazz piano, where each note you play resonates with decades of tradition and innovation.

Led by the renowned jazz pianist and educator Paul Tobey, winner of the prestigious IAJE (International Association of Jazz Educators) Award for Excellence in Jazz Education, this private group monthly masterclass is sure to engage you and propel your playing to new heights.

Our sessions unfold through interactive live Zoom meetings, ensuring you’re not just learning but actively participating. Each class follows a structured format with a detailed lesson plan, designed to build your skills progressively. Every session builds upon the last, weaving together a comprehensive understanding of jazz theory, improvisation, and technique, ensuring a cohesive learning experience.

With each lesson, you’ll receive downloadable sheet music to practice and master, providing you with the tools you need to internalize the concepts discussed. But we don’t stop there; we believe in the power of performance. You’re encouraged to submit your performances for constructive feedback, where Paul Tobey himself will provide detailed constructive feedback, highlighting both your strengths and areas for growth with the care and precision only a master educator can offer.

Join us in Jazz Piano Mastery, where your journey in jazz piano is not just about learning but about becoming part of a community that celebrates the art, history, and future of jazz. Let’s explore, learn, and grow together.

Technical Skills Development

Our focus is on honing the essential skills that will accelerate your progress in jazz piano. Here’s a glimpse into the specific areas we’ll concentrate on:

Scales and Arpeggios: Understanding and mastering scales and arpeggios is fundamental. We’ll delve deep into exercises that not only improve your finger dexterity but also your knowledge of jazz’s harmonic structure.

Chord Voicings & Chord Progressions: Jazz piano is as much about harmony as it is about melody. We’ll explore advanced chord voicings, moving from simple triads to complex chord extensions like 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths. And, you’ll learn how to string complex progressions together to make music that not only pleases the ear, but bends it to tradition.

Rhythmic Precision: Rhythm is the heartbeat of jazz. We’ll work on your timing through exercises that incorporate swing feel, Latin grooves, and other jazz rhythmic patterns. One of the exercises includes practicing a swing eighth-note pattern over the changes of “Autumn Leaves,” ensuring you can feel and execute the right swing feel at various tempos.

Technical Exercises: We’ll introduce exercises like Hanon’s Jazz Piano Exercises, adapted for jazz, to improve hand strength, coordination, and independence. For example, we might focus on an exercise that involves playing a bass line with the left hand while the right hand improvises over a II-V-I progression, enhancing your ability to manage complex jazz textures.

By focusing on these technical development areas, we aim to provide you with a solid foundation that not only allows you to progress quickly but also to express yourself with authenticity and creativity in the rich language of jazz piano.

One of the key benefits of joining Jazz Piano Mastery is that we record each and every session, providing you with an invaluable resource for your learning journey. This personalized critique is designed to pinpoint areas for improvement, celebrate your progress, and guide you towards becoming a more nuanced and expressive jazz pianist. Remember, your growth is our mission, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Having jazz piano lessons, as a novice, with Paul Tobey was the foundation for my ongoing love of and ability to play jazz, both as a solo musician, and in groups.  His knowledge is exceptional and he was patient and kind when it came to new concepts.  I learned so much from him that I use to this very day.  This included the skill of ‘comping’ or being able to harmonize and interpret a jazz chart, creating interesting solos, and so much more.  I would highly recommend having the opportunity to build jazz piano skills under Paul’s instruction.

Wonderful masterclass! I learned as much from your spoken content as I did from listening to you play. I jammed on the Bb blues after the class. I’m camping this weekend but will get some tracks to you early next week.

Dear Paul; This course has truly so much to offer that through my own personal experience I can honestly say will have your fingers dancing over those keys in a matter of months and be the very foundation of all your piano playing future.

It also makes learning to play the scales in particular a joy and so so easy. Once you know your majors you’ll have cracked it bearing in mind the relative minor key, sharpening the 7th for the harmonic minor. The melodic minor is the same as the major scale but with a flat 3rd ascending. My advice to you is learn your circle of 5ths and your good to go with this course. Can’t recommend it too highly. An excellent ten week course but don’t plan on ten weeks as it will be with your every day for the rest of your piano playing life.
