Angel Eyes is an important jazz standard and should be part of every musician’s repertoire. In this lead sheet transcription, I picked out the chords from Matt Dennis’ original recording from 1958. This is important because the lead sheet that is in the Real Book is written in C- while in this version Matt performs in D-. I believe that there’s a lot to be learned from the original artists’ recordings as that’s the way they intended the music to be performed. Yes, it’s important to know how to transpose tunes but at the same time, it’s also good to know the artist’s interpretation and their choice of chords.
Along with the sheet music PDF I’m including the bass and drums backing track which I recorded myself and used in online training on my Youtube channel which you can find here: https://youtu.be/CDjRagrv2LE In this video I describe important blues licks that work nicely on this tune.
